Christina Colanduoni is a PhD candidate in Music History and Theory at the University of Chicago specializing in the transnational circulation of Italian opera. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she received a B.A. in Music History from Temple University and an M.A. in Musicology from McGill University. Her master’s thesis focused on the representation of blindness in Italian opera. Alongside her specialty in opera, she has experience in medieval music paleography, focusing on the chansons of Guillaume Machaut as a research assistant for the Measuring Polyphony Editor. At the University of Chicago, she has served as a teaching assistant for courses spanning ethnomusicology, music theory, and music history. She has presented research at North American and international conferences, including those of the American Musicological Society, International Association for the Study of Pop Music, and the International Musicological Society. Most recently, she was awarded the American Musicological Society 2026-2027 William F. Holmes/Frank D’Accone Dissertation Fellowship in Opera Studies in support of her dissertation, “Crossing the Ionian Sea: Opera, Folk Song, and Colonial Culture in the Greek-Speaking Mediterranean, 1797–1850.” Her dissertation examines the movement of Italian opera and songs in the Greek-speaking Mediterranean, especially on the island of Kerkyra (Corfù), and the reception of Greek antiquity in early nineteenth-century operatic culture.

During her Fulbright grant, she will work with Professor Evi Nika-Sampson, the president of the Hellenic Musicological Society and Professor Emeritus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; Professor Dafni Tragaki of the University of Thessaly; and Greek musicologist Dr. Magdalini Kalopana. She looks forward to building connections with the musicological community in Greece and consulting archival sources that will shape her research. While in Greece, she also hopes to attend performances at the Greek National Opera and the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis). In her free time, Christina enjoys singing, playing tennis, and writing opera reviews for Parterre Box.
